Conor Humphries and Sam Cage of Reuters report that the Irish government has passed a law allowing abortion when the mother threatens suicide. As explained in an earlier post, the law is unconstitutional, but that doesn’t matter because it already has the Irish Supreme Court’s stamp of approval.
We should applaud those Members of Parliament who stood against the bill, especially those who were thrown out of the ruling party because of their vote. As Cage and Humphries relate:
In a sign of how contentious the abortion issue is, five of 76 members of parliament from Kenny's conservative Fine Gael party voted against the bill. The five have been expelled from its parliamentary grouping.
The refusal to vote for the bill by longtime Kenny ally Lucinda Creighton, once tipped as a possible leader of the party, ends her role as Europe minister.
"When it comes to something that is essentially a matter of life and death, I think it is not really possible to compromise," Creighton said in televised comments.
Other MPs tossed were Peter Mathews, Terence Flanagan, Brian Walsh and Billy Timmins. These MPs exhibited real courage in putting their political careers on the line to protect unborn babies.
